The Costa Brava feels like a little known secret. One hour north of Barcelona, the area is full of Michelin Star restaurants, art galleries in the middle of nowhere like Alzueta Gallery in Palau de Casavells, charmingly sophisticated old villages like Peratallada with Vermouth bars and cobble stone streets, a plethora of boutique hotels in old stone buildings, coastal towns like Tossa de Mar and Begur, with small coves to swim in….the list goes on. It’s where Salvador Dali grew up and had a studio. The area is known for great cycling and a rugged coastline with frighteningly beautiful views.
Marrakech captures all the senses…it’s a visual feast of colorful baskets and textiles, ceramics and rugs…so many things to look at and touch. The restaurants and spices add a pleasant aroma, masking the animal droppings and dust. Everywhere you turn, something is happening…motorcycles whirring by, people travel atop donkeys and bicycles. For someone like me, who loves to get swept up in an experience…this one really delivers. I also love balance, and Marrakech provides that as well. Secret gardens to escape to, traditional and modern hammans to wash the stress away, boutique hotels with interior oases to cool off in, architectural details to get lost in.
